Fire TV and VPN: putting a key on a Fire Stick

First find out which system your stick runs. Everything else follows from that.

Two systems under one name

Fire TV devices now run one of two systems. Most run Fire OS, which is built on Android and can install Android apps from outside Amazon's Appstore. Two newer models run Vega OS, Amazon's Linux-based system: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select from 2025 and the second-generation Fire TV Stick HD from 2026. According to AFTVnews, neither supports sideloading or the Downloader app, so a VLESS client cannot be installed on them.

Checking which one you have

  1. 1

Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then About.

  2. 2

Look at the software version line.

  3. 3

    "Fire OS" with a version starting with 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 14 means Fire OS.

  4. 4

"OS" with a version starting with 1 means Vega OS.

Putting a key on a Fire OS stick

  1. 1

Install the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.

  2. 2

In My Fire TV, open Developer Options and allow Downloader to install unknown apps; if Developer Options is hidden, click the device name under About seven times.

  3. 3

In Downloader, open the official release page of an Android VLESS client such as Hiddify or v2rayNG and install the APK.

  4. 4

Open the client and paste the key, typing through the Fire TV app on your phone rather than the remote.

  5. 5

Connect and accept the Android VPN prompt.

What usually goes wrong

  • The client does not appear on the home screen: look under Your Apps and Channels, then See All.
  • The APK will not install: pick the universal build, since sticks differ in processor type.
  • The key will not paste: send it through the Fire TV phone app or a note on your phone, not the remote.
  • The tunnel drops after a restart: open the client once and switch on its start-at-boot option if it has one.

On a Vega OS stick

A Vega OS stick only runs apps from Amazon's own store, and a VLESS client is not among them. The way to cover it is the router: if the router runs the key, the stick is in the tunnel without knowing it. Moving the stick to a Fire OS model is the other option.

Amazon has since let a few commercial VPN apps into the Vega OS store, Pocket-lint reported in November 2025. Those apps are tied to their own companies' subscriptions, and a VLESS key does not go into any of them.

Streaming apps with the key on

Fire TV is a streaming device first, and streaming apps are the ones most likely to refuse a VPN. Clients like v2rayNG let you choose which apps go through the tunnel, so you can leave a picky service outside it and keep the rest covered. Sideloading also asks for care: install only from the client's official release page, never from a mirror site, and turn unknown sources off again afterwards.

Questions

Can I use a VPN on a Fire TV Stick?

On Fire OS models, yes, with a sideloaded Android client. On Vega OS models, only through the router.

Is sideloading allowed on Fire TV?

On Fire OS, Amazon lets you allow apps from unknown sources in Developer Options.

Which client works best with a remote?

Both Hiddify and v2rayNG work; a phone keyboard makes the setup much easier.

Will the key slow my Fire TV?

Older sticks have slow processors, so pick a nearby server and expect a small delay when a stream starts.

Does the Fire TV count as one of my five devices?

Yes, while the client is installed and connected.

How do I know if my Fire TV runs Vega OS?

Open Settings, My Fire TV, About. A software version that starts with 1 means Vega OS.
